it was ok

I love the concept of this -- reinterpreting and repurposing fairy tales -- and taken as individual stories, they're great. But the larger arc of the story just didn't pull together for me. The long, drawn-out opening (over a quarter of the book!) and the character bits that should've mattered most were the clunkiest -- by the end of it, I get that David has stepped out of his childhood. Being explicitly told that was, well, a little disappointing.

The one thing this book illustrates really well is how robust fairy tales are. As long as you don't mess around too much with the core elements, you can get away with just about anything.
