I *loved* this book. The characters are excellently fleshed out, and the point of view characters are all quite complex.

The setting is very interesting as well. It's not a standard secondary world fantasy. The setting and its people are a well realized mixture of medieval, Renaissance and even a bit of post-Imperial Roman facets.

The history of the world is presented in glimpses rather than info-dumps. I suspect there may be several "unreliable narrators" at work about the world's history as well.

This book was a great example of a first book as well. It had several plots of its own, which were handled well, and brought to some form of conclusion. It also set the stage for the rest of the story to come.
