I almost feel wrong giving this book only 3 stars. It was actually quite good, just not really up my alley. My main issue with it is the slowly evolving plot. It's hard for me to say looking back exactly what happened in the book. It's mainly a series of different events that slowly cohere into an overall story about the interrelationships of the members of a powerful family and the people who work in their household. The way it details the various social interactions and customs of this time in China was very interesting. While I generally enjoyed reading it, I just had a hard time getting into the story. And this is only part 1 of 5. I'm on the fence about moving onto part 2, but I definitely need a break. Of course with the large cast of characters with hard to remember names (at least for a western reader), the longer I break the less likely I am to pick up the next book.
