Ohhh, my heart. I simply loved this debut novel by Chris Negron @negron.ca about the power of friendship, stories, and being your best self. Oh, and there's lots of baseball action and a pretty awesome comic adventure in here, too! Highly recommended for all elementary and middle school libraries. ...
Dan and Nate are obsessed with baseball and comics. But when a horrible accident puts Nate in a coma, Dan and their baseball team must try to go on without Nate. Then Dan has a brilliant idea -- maybe he can help Nate find his way back to him by creating a new version of their favorite comic. With the artistic skills of Nate's little brother, Ollie, and the writing prowess of a new friend, Courtney, Dan attempts to be a hero and save the day. The introduction of a mentor comes at exactly the right moment, however, and helps Dan understand that he doesn't need to be a hero to make a difference....
Dan Unmasked is one of those books you want to hug when you finish. There are so many excellent lessons that Dan (and the reader) learn throughout the course of the book. "Good things that happen aren't just luck, and they aren't just hard work. They're both." ...
My only wish is that the comic scenes that are described in the book could be actual comics. They are described in detail in the book, but those descriptions can't compete with actual visuals. (probably more of a publisher/cost issue than anything I'm guessing -- for the record, IMO this book would have been worth the investment!!)...
