I love Robert B. Parker and have read every one of his books, even the westerns. So, it was with great sadness that I learned of his death last year. Not only was I sad for his family, but also for his fans - how could we manage without another book about Spencer? Then came Ace Atkins. I was highly skeptical that anyone but Parker could write a Spencer book. But Atkins has it down pat - the witty dialog, the sophisticated humor, the interesting relationships among characters and the subtle plots. I'm sure a purist could go through the book line by line and fine inconsistencies in how Atkins writes compared to Parker. But you'd have to dig really deep. And Parker books aren't meant for deep thought. They're just plain fun to read. And Atkins has done Parker proud. Can't wait for the next one!
