Herta Muller delivers another poetically haunting novel about life as an ethnically German Romanian. In The Hunger Angel, we follow Leo, a 17 year-old into a Soviet labor camp (all Romanian Germans, aged 17 - 45 were relocated into camps following WWII), where he is haunted by hunger, homesickness, and the ability to survive. Muller takes the more than mundane, such as concrete and coal shoveling, and transforms it into an artful endeavor. This is a book to be savored.
