For Whom the Bell Tolls is the first Hemingway book that I've read since I was in high school (more than ten years now). This book was amazing. Hemingway paints a bleak picture of war and the ugly realities of it without boring the reader or leaving him or her behind.

The prose is beautiful because it is simple and natural. The landscapes of Spain during the Spanish Civil War are easy to visualize and the complex characters with contradicting goals and real emotions keep the reader invested in the outcome of the story.

Hemingway was a master storyteller and For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of the few novels that deserve to be listed as a classic.
