Historical Fiction
In The Book Thief, Death tells a story about a girl, Liesel Meminger, who became known as the Book Thief. During World War II in Nazi Germany, Liesel, a half Jewish girl, is sent to live with foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann, by her mother. On the way, her little brother dies. This is when Liesel steals her first book, a graveyard digger’s manual. Throughout the story, Liesel continues to steal books, however this time from the mayor’s wife. As the story unfolds, the Hubermanns who are sympathetic towards Jews, shelter a Jew in their basement. This Jew is Max Vandenburg. Also interweaved in the book, are stories about Rudy Steiner, Liesel’s best friend. This book is skillfully written to show the horrors of war and the tragic endings that happened aplenty during this time.
