Dora Rare is the first daughter to be born in five generations of Rares so she is an oddity even before elderly Marie Babineau, chooses her to be the rural town's next mid-wife. Set in Nova Scotia when the first medical school trained doctor arrives Dora's methods are challenged both by villagers who still believe in faeries and the advent of modern medicine which holds that women should give birth in hospitals. I was drawn in early and couldn't wait for my next reading opportunity. Its a book carried by it's dialog which is a good read for women.
