Norton's thesis is compelling and I think she defends it well (that is, shows how the evidence has only been partially read, ignored, or misread by previous historians). It's an important argument and advances our understanding of Salem 1692 a great deal. However, as a book this volume is too crowded, repetitive and just plain boring to be borne for long. Too bad the prose doesn't match the elegance of the argument.
