The Other Mrs. by Mark Kubica is a well written psychological thriller with all the staple ingredients mixed in perfectly. The main protagonist is hardly likable and the twists and turns are quite dark and upsetting. This is my first book by the author even though her books have been popping up across the reading platforms, of course, if one loves thrillers, there’s no way to ignore this brilliant author and The Other Mrs. is totally mind screwing thriller.

The story has 3 voices, Sadie a doctor married to Will with 2 children; Camille who is a stalker hell bent on making Will hers; and a 6-yr-old Mouse who is suffering terrible abuse at the hands of her step-mother. Certainly, being young and vulnerable, it is Mouse’s account that pulls at a reader’s heart strings. Sadie is facing multitude of problems, her husband’s infidelity, her elder son Otto is being bullied in his school, there’s been a lapse of concentration in treating a patient as a Doctor in emergency care coz of which she’s been forced to resign, so when Will’s sister leaves them a house in Maine it is time for a new beginning even though Will’s niece, Imogen also becomes the family’s responsibility. Imogen is 16, the first to see her mom dangling at the end of a rope so it is obvious she’s troubled and disturbed and needs help. But the move becomes a major mistake when police zoom in on Sadie as the main suspect for the neighbor’s murder.

Except for Sadie’s younger son Tate, there’s not a single character that feels lovable. Each and every one is creepy and leaves a suspicious trail and the murder next-door doesn’t help matters.

I had guessed the ending but surely getting there was one wild ride. There are some things that made me think What The?!?? I mean, how could Sadie be so naïve and trustful more so because she is a doctor, but these are just minor complaints in an almost perfect book. It is not easy to capture the painful emotions of a mental condition but Mary Kubica surely has done her research exceedingly well.

Highly recommended!
