really liked it
bookshelves: 2010s, american-authors, for-history-buffs, world-war-two

This is my new favorite book to recommend to reluctant grown-up readers and (mature) teenage guys, because the dialogue and pace show off the author's screenwriting chops, and the horrors of war (and yes, there are some truly stomach-turning descriptions of violence and desperation) are balanced by coarse but mirthful jokes, and two immensly main characters so likable and mismatched . Currently the head screenwriter for HBO's Game of Thrones, Benioff here fictionalizes an account of his grandfather's experience during the Siege of Leningrad.
