Eleven-year-old Lorelei seems to have it made when she's sent to a new school with a sparkly playground, two huge meals day and magical bowls of candy that automatically refill themselves. In fact, there's so many snack breaks during the day you might think the teachers are fattening up the kids. But why would they? (Pause for evil laugh.) In the flavor of Hansel and Gretyl, we're treated to a story with many twists and turns as Lorelei uncovers the secrets of the Splendid Academy. But Lorelei has secrets of her own -- and one of my favorite things about the story is how her own personal loss (Lorelei's mother dies) helps explain why she alone may be the only who can save the kids at Splendid Academy. A great story for younger kids who love mystery, magic and heart.
