This story by Pullman read almost like a folk tale or fairytale from another culture. The basic story is that Lila is being apprenticed by her own father to be a firework-maker. She loves it so much that she gets overeager to take the final step to become a full-fledged firework-maker, and sets out on a dangerous quest (without the necessary information from her father the master). She has the help of a good friend and his talking elephant during her journey, and there are some descriptions of some very cool fireworks displays in a grand finale. A really nice read, accompanied by some great illustrations.
