Sold by Patricia McCormick is the harrowing story of Lakshmi, a thirteen year old who is unknowingly sold into prostitution by her stepfather. She longs to return to Nepal, but finds herself trapped in India. Lakshmi tells her story through beautiful poetry that seems to find the silver lining in her horrible situation. This book was heartbreaking to read, but also fascinating. It really explores a subject that seems to be taboo to the rest of the world. I would suggest this book for readers aged 14 and up because a lot of the material is pretty dark.
