"The Strain" was solid. It did take a long time to get rolling; I understand Toro/Hogan were going for suspenseful build-up, which is generally fine, but I thought there was too much of it here. I would have appreciated it if the true action had started 100 pages sooner.
However, once all hell did break lose, the plot moved well. Creepy with brief spurts of action mixed in. I liked the main characters (Setrakian, Eph, Nora, Fet, Gus--although it was a smidge confusing in that most of them had such short monikers), and did care about their fate.
"The Strain" also did pretty good at having a complete story arc while still leaving things open-ended for the continuation of the series. This is sometimes a hard balance to achieve, but they succeeded.
Overall, not nearly as good as the similar "The Passage", but still, certainly worth reading.
