In this thrilling new novel from the author of Industrial Magic, a pregnant werewolf may have unwittingly unleashed Jack the Ripper on twenty-first-century—and become his next target.

Ever since she discovered she’s pregnant, Elena Michaels has been on edge. After all, she’s never heard of another living female werewolf, let alone one who’s given birth. But thankfully, her expertise is needed to retrieve a stolen letter allegedly written by Jack the Ripper. As a distraction, the job seems simple enough—only the letter contains a portal to Victorian London’s underworld, which Elena inadvertently triggers—unleashing a vicious killer and a pair of zombie thugs.

Now Elena must find a way to seal the portal before the unwelcome visitors get what they’re looking for—which, for some unknown reason, is Elena. (From book and amazon summary)

My Review

I was really excited when I seen this 6th book in the Women of the Otherworld series was about Elena and Clay and the pack. I love these characters. This story is centered around Elena and her pregnancy, which is difficult, since both parents are werewolves, and this is a first as far as they know. Elena gets herself into quite a mess, because she was bored. There was this letter that a half demon wanted her pack to steal so he could sell it. But somehow the letter contained a time cell/holding cell in a portal, with a piece of Victorian England that pops out some zombies, cholera, and possibly Jack the Ripper.

In this book, Kelly has introduces some new supernatural characters, such as Zoe Tankan, a female vampire with eyes for Elena, and she also brings back some characters that we love too. Nick, and Antonio are called to Canada to assist with the hunt for “Jack the Ripper”, and Jamie Vegas, a beautiful necromancer (and a burr up Clay’s backside), aids the werewolves with the eradication and the return of these zombies, and whatever else, back to their own time. We even have some gross killer diseased rats too.

This book has intrigue, betrayal, friendships, plot-twists you don't see coming.

Broken is so far, one of my favorite Women of the Otherworld storylines. Clay’s spiral into a fevered delirium is not without its scary moments and we watch Clay and Elena become a family with the upcoming birth. The birth scene is heartwarming and humorous, and you can almost hear the panic in their voices. Paige, as their long distance birthing coach makes it all come together; getting bits of other characters we have come to love.

Overall Broken is a very nice read, and a great addition to the urban-fantasy, supernatural genre. I really hope kick-ass Elena and Clay is going to make more appearances. I would love to see more of them.

I recommend this book and series to anyone who likes any of the Women of the Otherworld books, or any of Kelley Armstrong's work. Be sure to read Bitten first. It’s the first book in series, and has Elena and Clay.
