This is really two books in one. The first half is incredibly suspenseful and well crafted, far and away my favorite part of the series so far. Jacky's rise to power put me in mind a bit of Ender's Game. The way it's not a path she would have chosen, but when the only way out is up, by god Jacky Faber will play the game and come out on top. (Of course, she's not one to waste too much time angsting about it like poor Ender!) Also the sensitive portrayal of war.

Looking back, I loved the second half with the whole privateer saga, but at the time it felt very anticlimactic. Not sure why Mr. Meyer felt the need to keep these two stories together in a giant tome.
