really liked it
bookshelves: 2012, dystopia, psc-reviews, young-adult

Lugh and Saba are twins, born on mid-winter day. They live with their younger sister, Emmi, and their Pa, but Ma died in childbirth when Emmi was born. Life is hard for them. They live out in the middle of nowhere. Their lake is drying up from lack of rain; food is scarce. Raiders show up one day and kidnap Lugh. Saba vows to follow and get him back, no matter what it takes.

The writing is a bit distracting as it is in the vernacular of the characters, making it a good choice for more advanced readers. Those who liked “The Hunger Games” will also enjoy this action-packed story. Personally, I found Saba a bit rude, whiny, and conceited – so couldn't really figure out why the other characters hung around with her through so much adversity. It did keep my attention riveted, however, and I can't wait for the sequel.
