I was immediately intrigued by the concept of a far future set post-apocalyptic story written by Jack London. It's an unquestionable grandfather (granser?) to modern pandemic stories, and like several such stories it hasn't aged well because there are so many other examples to compare it to. Still, it's a quick story (I listened to the LibriVox audio version which came in at about two hours) and worth finding if for nothing else than the novelty it represents.
