Reychel is a slave in the king's court. She is turning 15 and dreading it. When slaves turn 15, the back of their neck is branded with their lord's sigil so as to make escape nigh onto impossible. When she wakes up on her 15th birthday, her friend Ivy is already gone. This is unusual and so Reychel starts to look for clues to where Ivy could be. She finds a token left by the Sons of Silence, showing that they have taken and freed Ivy. Reychel covers for Ivy as long as possible to help her in her escape. Later that day, Reychel is actually rescued by the same group. But this is just the beginning of some big changes for Reychel.

book 1 in a series. Ends on a total cliff hanger. I liked the characters and plot and will be looking for book 2.
