I have read several history books about the Haitian Revolution and Allende has done an excellent job of weaving a love story against the backdrop of the "other" revolution. She also writes her story from different points of view, although mainly through Zarite's eyes as she describes the transformation of her life from slave to a free women. The story follows her flight from Haiti, to Cuba, and then New Orleans. Most people don't know about the great displacement of millions of refuges escaping the horror of the Haitian Revolution and slavery. If you're passionate about Caribbean history, read this novel; you won't be able to put it down.
