I was a little disappointed in this book. For me, it started off very slow - and I don't mean in action but in emotionally engaging the reader. The story opens with Joy running away to Hong Kong after her father's suicide (no spoilers here as readers of Shanghai Girls will recall the ending) there is a whirlwind of change for her but it's written with very little of the emotional element and insight that could really allow the reader to connect with her character. I enjoyed it as a story about early communist China and revisiting familiar characters but I thought that with the evolving and complex familial relationships within the story there was such an opportunity to allow the reader connect on a deeper level but it never really happened. However, overall still an enjoyable read.
