Yes, it was a bit weird to start in the middle of a series. But that's what I did, mostly because I was on a George R.R. Martin kick.

If there was a place in the middle of the series to start and not get utterly lost, this was probably the best book to do so. I was caught up on the basic idea of the past stories within a couple chapters, and then absorbed into the story line of the current set of characters. This series is a collaboration of multiple authors, and various chapters you can see the different writing styles of the contributors. This could be potentially confusing and disruptive, but Martin's hand in editing helps everything come together quite well.
