A truly glorious story that is let down by poor quality of writing.
Benjamin Mee is (apparently) a journalist. Given a short topic, and finite space, he may very well be competent in this role. However, he was not cut out to write a novel.

I found that common errors in grammar and syntax made some parts of the book difficult to read. He has a tendency to drift away from topic, even mid-sentence, so that the end of a paragraph can be very different from the beginning. There are also a few detailed paragraphs which have been repeated almost verbatim in following chapters; such that you begin to wonder if the work was properly proof-read. It's not often you get déjà vu while reading, but you'll certainly get it here.

There is a short series of photos in the book, which seem to have been included just to give weight to its identification as a work of non-fiction. They lack inspiration. The book is about saving and restoring a zoo, and yet there are no photos of the zoo! The pictures of animals are bland and unnecessary.

Overall, disappointing.
