In a futuristic setting, washed-up detective Tom Holliday gets a second chance when he's invited to join a special investigation squad that is unconventional, to say the least. His first case kicks off with a young woman's murder. There are plenty of clues, but initially they seem impossible. Holliday not-so-gradually learns there's a lot more to the world than he realised.

I enjoyed seeing the story unfold through Holliday's eyes - he's a likeable and distinctive character. There are a lot of challenges and revelations thrown at him, and we quickly get a sense of many more factions (and powers) at play than were initially apparent. Perhaps because of all these new elements appearing, I'm not sure I managed to keep up in the later part of the story: still, it was fun to go along for the ride.

An enjoyable, fast-paced read with a fun mix of technology and magic.
