** spoiler alert ** I am somewhat amazed at all the five star reviews this book has received. Yes, it paints an interesting picture of life in the 1940's circus and yes having two gay heroes gives it a twist. And i did read it through the end. But it strikes me that many of the reviewers really likes the main characters and found them believable. I think that's only possible if you accept three things (which I can't)
1) That a 23 year old hitting on a 14 year old can be the basis for a real relationship.
2) That regular physical violence between an involved couple can be accepted and brushed over.
3) That a really screwed up individual can be transformed in the last 5 pages when his father figure tells him that he loves him no matter what.

If all those things work for you, then I can understand the five star reviews. For me, it stays at 3 stars because while I read to the end, after the end I wasn't sure why I spent the time.
