I read this as a book group selection. I liked the beginning (maybe one-third) of the story, but much of it didn't seem realistic to me. The writing was just okay. The part that was set in California didn't appeal to me at all. I'm not sure what reason the author had in creating the different settings. The 'secret' wasn't really a secret to the reader. I wouldn't recommend this book. I think it was selected as a choice for us so we could read about a North African Muslim culture.
