really liked it
bookshelves: 2012, appealing-characteristic-character, historical, romance, part-of-a-series

I've been wanting to read Penelope's story and was delighted that she could find her HEA.
After being dumped by a duke, Penelope has had several marriage offers but each is more humiliating than the last. The latest is from her childhood friend, Thomas. Alas, if there were a childhood friend she wanted to marry, it would be the one who stopped writing to her years ago.
Michael, the Marquis of Bourne, lost his entire in one flip of the cards when he was twenty-one. It all went to Thomas' father, the man who had been Michael's guardian. Recently, Penelope's father won a crucial piece of land in a card game and has added it to Penelope's dowry. She's now twenty-six and the fact that she hasn't married is tainting her sisters' seasons as well.
Michael, like any good romance hero would do (sarcasm, har), kidnaps Penelope and then ruins her so she has no choice but to marry him. He's still got his demons and it's threatening to destroy their marriage. Penelope thinks she could be happy with this man she'd always dreamed of marrying, if only he'd stay home long enough for her to figure him and their situation out. She's trying to make the best of a bad situation but Michael's not helping at all, in fact, he's working hard to push her away from him and the club of vice that helped to bring back the fortune he lost.
