Just too light ultimately. If I could start all over again I would actually start reading McCarthy with this book. That way it creates a more natural buildup to things as they grow longer. This is the fifth of McCarthy's books I've read (Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, No Country..., The Road) which puts me halfway through. I really like dropping everything to read a McCarthy because I feel like I owe the sentences my full attention, immersion. I didn't like the fact that it probably took me a grand total of two hours to read this one.

That said I actually like the story. It's a page turner for sure. It's heavily grotesque and deep into the pathos of many McCarthyian (McCarthyan?) characters. It's like looking through the peephole of someone's life years after he has stopped staring into yours. I don't know why we like dark stuff like this. Maybe it's because we want to feel a little less crazy in our own heads knowing someone out there thinks like this...or at least thinks about a character who thinks like this.
