it was amazing

I grabbed this from the library when it won the Newbery, and it was thoroughly delightful. I loved that it presented the issues of race but kept it free from just being black/white because some white kids were good and some were nasty, but about more than just color. They were just rude overall. And some black kids were friendly and others were not really. And sometimes the black kids overreacted to things that weren't meant to be racist, and sometimes the teachers were just clueless instead of intentionally unkind. I can't comment on whether it should have won or not because I haven't read all of the competition, but I can see why a story like this that also happens to be part of the massive graphic novel explosion would win.
