I think everyone at some point in their lives has felt like an outsider - imagine feeling that way in a community where unquestioning obedience is not just the norm, but expected without debate. Very interesting look at a sheltered community which both shuns the secular world and depends on it. I wish the author had gone into more detail about why adherents to Satmar follow what appear to be pretty unorthodox rituals (pun intended), like head-shaving for married women. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in learning about the very different ways our fellow Americans live...
