really liked it

Candida Pugh spoke recently at a wonderful women's organization (The Women's Exchange) located in the north suburbs of Chicago. I didn't have the chance to hear her talk, but a friend attended and shared her copy of Pugh's novel with me. Fascinating story. I'm younger than Pugh, but I've always thought I knew a good deal about the Freedom Rides of the early 60's . Well, from reading this I quickly learned that my insight was limited, but this 'fictionalized memoir' is filling in many of my gaps...

The material is painful, but important, the narration believable and skillfully crafted, the characters well-drawn and compelling.

Definitely a must-read for anyone who wants a better sense of race relations, past and present.
