A sweet and charming story of a kid who doesn't fit in. Aster lives in a very gendered world: women are witches and men are shifters. But he wants to work magic. The story is a familiar one to anyone who has ever defied expectations and wanted a different life than the typical one granted them.

While very straightforward, the story still pleases and I was cheering for our hero to find happiness from nearly the first page. My daughter, more the target age group for this book, adored it and I quite liked it.

Very positive and accepting messaging without becoming annoyingly pedantic, though a bit simple for my tastes. I'd like to have seen deeper relationships and a little more subtlety, but then again it is a young adult story. The heart of the story is well placed.
