's review

In the futuristic setting of The Gate, an attempt to reduce global warming has been rather too successful, resulting in an Earth that is gradually freezing. We follow Kiva Soren on her attempt to leave her doomed home behind. She signs up to pass through the Gate in the hope of a better future, but with a much higher chance of dying in the attempt.

I enjoyed learning about Kiva's world, and the little details of how society had changed to cope with the new environment. Given that much of the story covered Kiva and other would-be migrants' preparation/training for the passage, she seemed to be more of an observer than pushing the action herself. I think that worked well for a story of this length although if it had been longer I'd have wanted to see more of her.

An intriguing scenario in a well-developed setting.
