It's been said a classic is a book everyone knows bot no one has read. I like Huck Finn, but it is far from the Great American Novel (apologies, Mr. Hemmingway).

My chief complaint is against the editor who did not cut or at least shorten the three excruciating chapters involving the King and the Duke which serve more to turn the novel into a dime novel.

Lose those chapters and then Ernest and I would be in agreement. The book, in terms of theme, subject matter, character and plot cannot be disputed in terms of their brilliance.

In short, read the book, skip the aforementioned chapters and revel in the artistry.
