really liked it
bookshelves: fiction

This is another book that didn't make it to my high school curriculum, so I'm just experiencing Baldwin's classic now. Each line of the book has the same passion and beauty that he ascribes to the character Gabriel's sermons. There's much the same stirring effect, too; I was so wrapped up in the characters' intimate struggles to figure out what sin and redemption meant for themselves, that the experience of reading this book was itself almost religious.

I don't have the same history as these characters, but I was raised in a church, and I think anyone who had that childhood will recognize the seriousness with which Gabriel, Elizabeth, Florence, and John treat their relationship with God.
