Of the four novel-length Sherlock Holmes, I believe this one is the best. It is a sandwich - that is, the main story being a flashback sandwiched between a present-day crime and the present-day denouement. The flashback section comprises the bulk of the story, set in the iron/coal districts of Appalachia; with the beginning/ending taking place in England. The account of the doings of the fraternal society which controls the iron/coal area is fascinating. There are several surprise developments in the story.

Rick Mills I read the print version, not the audio CD, but I couldn't find how to fix that.
