I've always been drawn to stories that take place in small towns like this one in North Carolina. The author, Wiley Cash, painted a vivid picture of this tragic story as it unfolds through the perspective of each of the characters who were involved, Whether it was the young brother, Jesse Hall, who had a mute older brother, Stump, that his mother was determined to have saved by the town preacher, or the town sheriff, Clem, who had his doubts about the pastor and his ways, along with the neighbor woman, Adelaide, who had to witness more than she wanted. They all had their own personal histories that gave weight to the entire story and it's parade of characters. This a is a great first time novel by Wiley Cash and a highly moving story that most fiction readers will love to dive into!
