did not like it

This was quite a disappointment. I heard very good things about it, and the concept was simply wonderful. Unfortunately, Marcus is clearly more in love with words than plot or characters, and the book reads like a sophomore creative writing effort. If one adjective is good, then three must be better. If saying something once will suffice, then saying it several times using increasingly strained metaphors has to be an improvement. Alas, that is not so, and after getting a little ways into the book I was so annoyed that I simply stopped reading. And I like my ornate writing: Leautremont, Huysmans, Clark Ashton Smith, all of these are high on my list. But this book felt like empty words letting a marvelous idea go to waste. Pity.
