The Sneetches and Other Stories, by Dr. Seuss, is a collection of four stories. The first one, The Sneetches, is about a group of creatures called Sneetches, some of which have green stars on their stomachs. At first, the Sneetches with stars look down upon those without stars. Sylvester McMonkey McBean starts selling stars to the Sneetches without stars with his new Star-on machine, but this poses a threat to the Sneetches with stars. They feel that their special status is becoming ordinary, so in order to remain feeling special they start having their stars removed. Eventually, the Sneetches can no longer tell who is who. It no longer matters who has a star-belly and who has a plain-belly, because they learn that they’re all really the same and can be friends. This book teaches children about prejudices and how deep down we are all really more similar to one another than we are different.
