It's been a while since I've read a book this thought provoking in a good yet admonishing sense.

The basic structure is that of identifying the importance of one's mind as a Christian, detailing the anti-intellectualism of the church, and then explaining the author's plan to fix it. All arguments to support the importance of the mind to the Christian are well founded and biblically supported. Nothing too surprising or paradigm shifting there, mostly just drawing a spot light on a often neglected aspect. Moreland makes very good arguments to support his claim on the current state of anti-intellectualism in the general US evangelical society. His assertions are based both on popular evidence from the culture, citing specific examples here and there over the last few decades, but also on his extensive personal experience as a teacher and a preacher.

The book reads well (there are even whole sections in the book on two different kinds of 'reading' and how to read effectively) even though Moreland sometimes vacillates in a cumbersome way between a "simple" topic and a very complex one. In spite of this, his discussions on logic and other complex ideas are still very attainable and thoroughly described for a majority audience (If I could follow it, I'm sure others would be able to!). It's quite evident that Moreland ascribes to his own philosophy of often reading slightly beyond your ability as to stretch and teach yourself and to expand your mind.

All in all, I think Moreland does a very good job of stating the importance of the mind in every Christian's life and in providing ways to nurture it. It's a claim that I completely agree with, in fact it exactly describes my motivation for reading this book in the first place! My mind feels expanded, properly admonished, and inspired after reading this book to continue feeding my mind that it might grow to continually give a more seasoned, and reasoned, defense of the gospel of Jesus. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. Even if they are particularly uneducated, this book will give them a good opportunity to stretch their mental faculties and dust off some recesses of the mind that are not often used, which, after all, is what the book is all about!
