I'm kind of torn by this book.
On one hand, it evoked so many emotions in me because of how real, and possible the situation was. There are school shootings, and they've been increasing in the past few years. And this just broke my heart because it felt real. I can't imagine the terror that all the victims go through, and it was heartbreaking seeing so many people die. It's heartbreaking because this did, and still does, happen in real life.
But it's also really lacking. The characters aren't the best and honestly. Tomas, and Matt were the ones who I cared for the most. Claire annoyed me really. But Matt and Tomas, it was so so so sad.
As others have also mentioned, Tyler, the shooter, is very one dimensional. He's just bad. There's nothing good about him at all. Pure evil, and maybe a little psychopathic. Honestly, there wasn't anything good about him, and his grief for his mother was rather downplayed. And the "reasons" why he wanted to shoot Sylv was because she "took" Autumn from him. He also wanted to shoot Autumn because she "left" him. But then, that was overshadowed by the crimes he's committed in the past, and in the he's just a bad guy that no one will ever love or feel sorry for. And I don't think that's how it happens. That's not what leads to people shooting their classmates, their teachers. Ok, granted, there may be one or two true psychopaths who've done that, but this just didn't feel real.
It may be because of how little time we really had with the characters, or just because it's focusing on the things happening, but the others were also rather flat. Tomas and Sylv were the best out of the four, and I found that I didn't like Autumn much. Claire was annoying.
So yeah. It was horrible reading about people dying, and for no real reason, and Matt. (view spoiler) No one deserves something horrendous happening to them, fictitious or real.
I picked this up on a whim. I finished half of it before forcing myself to do other things, and then I came back and finished the rest in one go. It's really addictive and sad, but it also has some issues.
And that's pretty much all I've got to say.
