really liked it

This was my first Gaitskill, which I picked up after a friend whose opinion i hugely respect multiple times said she is her favorite author. I was intrigued.

She was much more experimental than I expected. But she kept herself tethered to earth (mostly) through precise yet nuanced character descriptions and development. Many of the stories involved some kind of flashback which she wears in brilliantly.

I'm going to have to soak it in a little more but it was the first book where I did what I've been wanting to do for a while but resisted - I took notes. It all felt too rich and so much more than I probably gathered at first read and I just disk want to forget my thoughts. Which is maybe ironic considering her characters are often obsessed with their own thoughts.
