Harry Dolan’s debut novel, Bad Things Happen, was a great book. I could not put it down. Afterward, I checked Amazon and my local bookstore often hoping there would be a sequel. Very Bad Men, the sequel, is written in the same style as the first book. I liked many of the characters and I loved the relationship between the protagonist, Dave Loogan, and his partner, Elizabeth Waishkey, and the relationship Loogan develops with other characters in the book. The author also has created a wonderful setting in Ann Arbor and other cities and towns in Michigan.

The plot, however, is difficult to believe. Sometimes I felt twist and turns were added to the story just to give twist and turns to the story. Overall, I was let down by this book, but perhaps my expectations were too high.

If you love mystery and suspense, read Bad Things Happen. Very Bad Men is not as good; that said it is still better than a lot of books in the market.
