it was amazing

The third in an exciting new series of photo-history books on Hong Kong - and this one's a stunner. There are other -mostly very large and expensive - photo books on old Hong Kong but none like David Bellis' books, which take you on the sort of guided tour that shows you all the curious nooks and crannies, whilst giving you an understanding of the bigger picture.
Old Hong Kong Photos and the Tales They Tell Volume 3 by David Bellis deals with HK's raison d'être ... the water around it. It focuses on the harbour, merchant and naval fleets, sea travel ... but also the relationship its people had with the sea long before the British pushed the Union Jack into its soil. There are a wealth of pictures here, many of them not previously published, accompanied by well-researched yet easily absorbable text. The production and layout of this volume is excellent - although its not much larger than a standard paperback, the definition and depth of the photo reproduction is such that you can see all sorts of detail - and take a magnifying glass and there's still more is revealed. Whether you live in / have lived in / have visited Hong Kong I'd challenge you not to make multiple delightful discoveries.
