Book 1 of The Wheel of Time series has a very familiar feel to anyone who reads fantasy, and yet there are enough unique aspects to separate this book (and, I'm hoping, the series) from others.

The characters, at first filling stock fantasy roles, start to flesh out as the action moves forward. The 3 young men, Rand, Mat, and Perrin, have unique experiences in this book that help to distinguish them from each other. The women perhaps less so, although Moiraine, the Aes Sedai sorceress, is a distinct character from the beginning.

There is a lot of backstory to assimilate and Jordan does a fairly good job of bringing the reader up to speed without too many info dumps and with enough questions still left unanswered.

Looking forward to book 2.

Shel I liked the first few books of this series well enough, but gave up after book 7 when I found that I just didn't care to continue. I'm still vaguely curious about how things turn out and I might go back to it someday in the misty future, but I've got so much else to read that it probably won't happen anytime soon!

Kathi Shel, I'm reading it because the Fantasy Book Club Series Group here on Goodreads is doing the series as a group. (Of course, I'm a month behind--they are finishing book 2 at the end of May...) I've never read these and so the group read was my impetus to try them.
