This had its moments, and I enjoyed Coetzee's deft writing. But the book left me feeling uncomfortable and uncertain throughout, which was perhaps the point. The racially charged sexual violence in this book left me wondering about right, wrong and the shades of gray in between. Do those shades of gray even exist? The main characters, a father and daughter, frustrated me with their questionable actions. Why did you do that? Why did you say that? Why didn't you do this? And you never really get satisfying answers.

By the last page, I had knots in my stomach from the tension and unresolved moral issues. In the end, the protagonist lets all of that go, because he has no choice. As a reader, it was difficult to do the same.
