Maybe 2.5 stars. Probably not.

I bought this book because #1: This is J.K. Rowling. The Harry Potter series is my second favorite book series ever...those books mean so much to me. #2: The premise sounded okay. I can usually get drawn into small-town English stories.

The good: At times her writing style reminded me of HP, and it was completely English, with mentions of corridors, headmasters, etc. Every once in a while I would think, this bit is actually good. Maybe it's going up from here. Sometimes she was *almost* Jane Austenish in her observations about people and their little quirks, but...

The bad: Other times, the characters would just do or think the most completely random thing. And I would be like, what?? Also, they're all incredibly unlikable. The only two I could sort-of deal with were Tessa and Kay.

The ugly: This book is basically full of filth. All of the profanity, sex, drugs, abuse, etc. grated on my nerves so that I could hardly focus on the election plot. Maybe this kind of living is realistic for some people, but it was so hard to keep reading. It was bleak and depressing. If I had a dollar for every bit of profanity used (or even just every f-bomb), I would be a very wealthy girl. I have no desire to read that stuff.

{The very end was somewhat redeeming, though sad. It seemed like most of the characters were going to try to change.}

Mostly my overriding feeling about The Casual Vacancy right now, minutes after finishing it, is this: I regret that I spent $20.80 on a book I will very likely never read again. However, I haven't given up on Ms. Rowling. I very much look forward to her next book, which I hear will probably be a children's book. After this, I'm not so sure I want to read anymore of her "adult" books.

Robin $20.80?! Oww.....

I liked your "good, bad & ugly" categories :)

Kristin Yeah, I know. At least I preordered it from Amazon rather than buying it at Target- that saved me about three dollars, anyway. I really should have gotten it from the library. I've learned my lesson! :)

Thanks. :)
