Tricky balance here... the author has clearly done amazing research and uncovered interesting primary source material to support key pieces of this story. But she has also given her real-life heroine emotions, sympathies and attitudes that have no basis in fact and seem to me like they might have applied to a more modern woman and not a French peasant born in 1740. But I kept reading, rolling my eyes at the “she must have felt…” sentences and waiting for the details based on historical documents which were the real star of this story.
